Dublin Borough came away with the President’s Trophy at the First Aid Competitions which took place from 4-5 November in Gormanston College, Co Meath. The First Aid Competition provides a platform for Irish Red Cross first aiders from across the country – across a range of age category and skill levels – to demonstrate their abilities.

Individuals and teams of first aiders entered expertly-staged simulations of various scenarios such as domestic, workplace or public accidents, natural disasters and other emergency situations. At each station the team of individuals were observed and marked by a judge, not only on their first aid skills but on their assessment of the situation and their patient interaction.

Dublin Borough were deemed overall winners and are now going forward to represent Ireland at FACE ( First Aid Convention in Europe) .

Sandra Creegan who is a senior volunteer with Dublin Borough said “the President’s Competition demands commitment, dedication and hard training and is not entered into lightly. The 2017 competitions in Gormanstown was a test of not only first aid skills but also of lateral thinking and improvisation. Diagnosing measles from a rash, emergency evacuation of spinal casualty, multiple-trauma casualties with gun-shot wounds, amputations and cardiac arrests ensured every member of the team was pushed to their limits. A mid floor-test fire alarm also helped to keep the teams focused on the tasks at hand. It was only with the announcement of the final result and awarding of the trophies that the nerves finally subsided to be replaced by anticipation and excitement at the thoughts of representing Ireland in FACE 2018.”

Congratulations to all involved, especially to overall winners Dublin Borough.
